What does asbestos do?

Asbestos related diseases are currently responsible for about 3000 deaths a year in Britain. Work with asbestos can release small fibres in the air, many of those suffering today from asbestos related diseases worked in the building trades. Breathing in asbestos fibres can eventually lead to a number of diseases.

These include:

Asbestosis or fibrosis (scarring) of the lungs
Lung cancer
Mesothelioma, a cancer of the inner lining of the chest wall or abdominal cavity.

There is no cure for asbestos related diseases but providing the asbestos material is intact and in a position where it cannot be easily damaged, it will not pose a risk to health by releasing fibres into the air.

As of May 2004 new regulations state that it is required by law that anyone who is recognised as controlling a building must hold an asbestos register for that property. The 'duty to manage' asbestos requires those in control of premises to find out if there is asbestos in the building. Prior to removal of asbestos a permit must be obtained. The official HSE notification period for a licence is 14 days depending on the type of asbestos.
