NWS’s partnership with British Athletics reached a new level with our involvement in these games. British Athletics recognised the benefits of having a “one-stop shop” for their facilities and soft services support after the London Olympics and the relationship has gone from strength to strength each year culminating in engaging NWS for this, their most prestigious event in recent times.
Thrown into the spotlight again with such a high profile project, good management was essential, following a considerable amount of work on the build up a full-time team was based at the stadium in a dedicated project office for the 9-week duration. From here the operations could be managed between our carefully selected suppliers and the customer. Working within the Organising Committees budget and recognising the importance of hitting every deadline if the games were to run smoothly effective project management and logistics were key. Following the high state of alert in the capital working around the often changing external pressures of site security that such a large event poses threw up some challenges to the programme and logistics which the site team met each and every time.
NWS were called upon to supply a wide range of plant and equipment, site accommodation for outside broadcasters and support staff, some 100 tonnes of furniture for the stadium and all of the items required behind the scenes to run such an event which is never seen by the general public enjoying the show at home on their TV’s!
Of course, the most important aspect of the running of any event is the people and working closely with two of our key London based labour supply partners our handpicked teams worked multi shifts throughout supporting British Athletics in a wide variety of tasks. Working through the rig, on-event and de-rig phases of the event involved the installation and removal of hired furniture, distribution of over 1 million bottles of water and other food items to athletes and staff throughout the various venues in the capital, assisting event sponsors and most importantly being available to react to the inevitable “last minute” requests that get thrown up as the project progresses.
Following an exhausting 9 weeks which tested the teams to their limits, NWS had contributed to what was deemed by all involved to be an exceptionally successful series of events hitting every deadline given and meeting the budget expectations of the London 2017 Organising Committee.
“I would like to say how amazing your team were during the London 2017 World Championships. No request was too much and Chris, Leon and Toby, in particular, went above and beyond regularly throughout the event. To say that the Championships would have suffered without Nationwide Services support would be an understatement and we look forward to working with you again in the future”.
